Day 1
Head South on the Explorer Highway, travelling east of the Pitjantjara aboriginal lands to Marla (meaning Red Kangaroo in the local language).
Then it's on to the largest opal mining field in the world, Coober Pedy, as we head in to town we'll pass the extensive mining operations that make Coober Pedy the opal capital of the world.
Coober Pedy is a place where people live underground to escape the heat of the desert.
Homes are mined out of the rock and provide an average temperature of 18oC.
You can experience this yourself as accommodation in an underground mine is included.
